Favre was not in the quarterback position when the play in question occurred. Instead, he lined up as wide receiver as part of the Vikings’ Wildcat formation. As Houston Texans’ Eugene Wilson began to close in on the ball, Favre cut back and threw his body into Wilson’s knees.
Officials immediately threw a penalty flag, as Wilson writhed on the ground clenching his left knee. It was ruled a crackback block, and Minnesota was penalized 15 yards on the play.
The Monday Night Football commentators, including Jon Gruden, who once coached Favre, sharply criticized the move, saying “you’re messing with a guy’s career when you do that…I don’t care if it’s Brett Favre or not, that’s not cool.”
Now some outlets are reporting that the legendary quarterback may even be fined for the incident. NFL officials are reportedly reviewing the play to determine if action is necessary.
Players had a mixed reaction following Monday’s game, some thought it was admirable that the 39-year-old would throw such a nasty block, others including Eugene Wilson, seemed shocked, saying: “Seriously, what was up with that?”
Number 4 tried to explain himself after the game:
“Percy was running my way. Believe me, I hope [Wilson] is OK. I hope it didn’t look as bad on film as it may have seemed but my intentions, believe me, were not to hurt anyone, including myself. … But I think had I not blocked anyone and just got out of the way and Percy gets hit and gets hurt, I think that looks worse. But once again I hope he’s OK. Believe me, my intentions were not to be cheap.”
