Madonna adopts Mercy James
Madonna has reportedly filed adoption papers in hopes of adopting Malawian orphan Mercy James. The case could be heard in a Malawi court as soon as Monday, authorities report. There were concerns that Madonna’s divorce from Guy Rtitchie may hold up the legalities, as authorities are reluctant to send children into “a broken home.” Simon Chisale, Malawi’s child welfare chief, told the Daily News that morality was an adoption issue.
“We do not only look at the material issues, but also the moral standing of prospective adoptive parents, because we do not want our children’s morals to be corrupted.”
Perhaps what helped the adoption is seeing how well her son David is doing after a year of living a new life. A U.S. government official has reportedly confirmed that an adoption of three-year-old baby girl Mercy James is underway. An official at the Ministry of Gender and Child Development told Reuters,
“We expect her over the weekend or earlier than that…but without a doubt she is coming before the end of this month.”
Mercy’s mother reportedly died in childbirth, leaving the child an orphan.
Madonna’s reps have yet to confirm the adoption, but it seems as though everything is in place. Check out photos of Mercy James here, she is a cutie.

Madonna has officially adopted Mercy James! Three-year-old Chifundo “Mercy” James is expected to call Madonna mom by midweek! After initially being denied, as a judge ruled that prospective parents must live in Malawi 18 to 24 months, the decision was over turned today. Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo deemed the residency requirements an “old law” and approved the adoption. Madonna’s rep Liz Rosenberg, released this statement on behalf of Madonna.
“I am extremely grateful for the Supreme Court’s ruling on my application to adopt Mercy James. I am ecstatic. My family and I look forward to sharing our lives with her.”
