Kennedy, the longtime senator from Massachusetts, passed away late Tuesday evening. He had been battling brain cancer for awhile, but unfortunately he lost the battle. Kennedy, a member of the most iconic family in American politics, died at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. He was 77-years-old.
Sen. Kennedy’s endorsement gave Barack Obama’s Democratic presidential candidacy a major boost in the 2008 primary season. On May 20, 2008, doctors first reported that the liberal lion had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor after suffering a seizure days before. He underwent a three hour surgery in North Carolina that June; however, the brain tumor still remained.
Kennedy’s only surviving sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away on August 11. Sen. Kennedy was unfortunately too ill to attend his sister’s funeral.
